How we worked this out
- Water is priced at Anglian Water's metered rates for 2026/27, water and used water together, about 0.53p a litre.
- Each person has one 8 minute shower a day. It runs at 12 litres a minute before the restrictor and 7.5 after. A stronger shower saves more.
- Shower water is heated by a gas boiler at the Ofgem price cap from October 2026, 7.97p a kWh. An electric shower is not suited to a restrictor.
- Each person flushes 4 times a day at home. An old single flush cistern uses 9 litres and the dual flush valve 4.5 on average. A newer cistern saves less.
- The saving depends on how many people live at home. A second shower or toilet adds to the cost but not to the saving, since the same people share them. Fit every one so all their use is covered.
- A water butt saves 2,000 litres a year of mains water in the garden. A dry summer means less.
- Savings only show on a water meter. On rateable value bills a meter is the first step.

Saving water is close to my heart
I have been plumbing in Norfolk for fifteen years and know the problems we face as a county. Most of my work is repairs and upkeep in people's homes: taps, toilets, showers, seals and pressure.
On every job I look for water going to waste. A dripping tap or a cistern that never stops filling costs more than most people think. ECO-U is my plumbing business and where I sell the fittings that fix it.
